Claiming tax relief on your work mileage
In the UK, the HMRC allows you to claim tax relief on mileage for your work, but not to your place of work. Your employer may pay you for your miles, and if it is less than the rates below the difference can be claimed too.
| First 10,000 business miles in the tax year | Each business mile over 10,000 in the tax year | |
|---|---|---|
| Cars and vans | 45p | 25p |
| Motorcycles | 24p | 24p |
| Bicycles | 20p | 20p |
For self-employed people, keep records and claim through your tax return. Employed people who want to claim can do so online, and you will need to upload the logs in the claim process.
That’s where the Simple Mileage Tracker app comes in – you can simply log all your work miles and download the CSV or PDF to do your claims.
Version 5 of the app adds start postcode and end postcode for each journey. That’s required by HMRC for uploaded logs. The suggestion is that you log each leg of a round trip independently – not a round trip as one journey.
Why not install Simple Mileage tracker today – its a small one of payment and no expensive subscription!
